It was an exciting first day of intersession!  Our first stop was the Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO). First, we had a nice tour of the Scripps Pier.  The pier serves many functions, an important one being (semi) filtering sea water for public use.  We were able to see some dolphins cruising and many shovel-nose guitar fish swimming in the shade of the pier.  We also embarked on a tour of an oceanography lab at SIO. In this lab, they design large flotation devices that measure salinity, temperature (among many other aspects of the ocean) deep in the sea.
After a nice lunch, the class was able to walk along La Jolla Shores.
