Final Artist's Argument
The painting, The Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Planets is a fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. From 1508 to 1512, the famous Michelangelo Buonarroti Simoni painted it and it is the second panel of the series of nine on the ceiling. The Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Planets is based on the biblical creation of the universe from Genesis 1:6-8. Many symbols in the painting make a direct reference to the Bible. The Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Planets is a beautiful fresco. It displays a very clear interpretation of how the universe came to be. As an artist in the Renaissance, the only practical way to make money was to paint for the church. Many would argue that Michelangelo was not in any way religious, and only painted for money. Others would argue however, that Michelangelo produced art whilst deeply under the influence of the Holy Spirit. In fact, one woman stated, “The only possible way for him to paint as diligently and quickly as he did, was to be under the influence of the Lord”.
As the viewer may notice on the right, God is rushing through the air with his band of angels whilst extending his arms in a cross-like shape. This may be a reference to Jesus’ crucifixion. Also, God has heavier shadows on the right of his face versus his left. His body motion implies he is going away from the dark shadows; after all, he has just created the sun. Some analysts state that this is a reference of keeping all creation away from darkness, and in the light.
In Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, there are many references towards “the light”. “The light” is believed to be an allegory for God. Michelangelo uses contrast to the best of his ability in this painting. The whole painting is asymmetrical; with the sun in the center. The sun is the only element of color that clearly stands out next to the subdued tones of the cold moon, and the monotone silks covering the creator. The bold color of the sun brightens the whole fresco, further referencing the greatness of God.
The left foreshadows God leaving the ceiling fresco, on His way to his next task, creating the land and foliage of the earth. This figure of God is in a more restricted position and further back from the picture plane. Because this depiction of God is farther left, it creates a feeling of restriction toward the figure, establishing a greater sense of urgency. Although this fresco depicts two visages of God, he is still in perfect relation from the solar disk in the sky, implying also that he has full control.
Some would argue that the figure of God looks angry. The four angels surrounding him appear to be in awe of his clear, authoritative presence. One angel is shading his face whilst his mouth is wide open, exposing his feeling of consternation towards God. The two angels on the right are hiding their faces from the almighty, in fear that the rush through the universe is too much to handle.
The Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Planets was finally completed after four years. When the whole of the Sistine Chapel was finished, Michelangelo told the public, "After more than 400 over life-size figures, I felt as old and as weary as Jeremiah. I was only 37, yet friends did not recognize the old man I had become." During Michelangelo's painting career, many did not understand the amount of painting he had accomplished so far in his life. By the time Michelangelo was forty, he had painted and sculpted more than 78 average artists would ever create in their lifetimes. The Creation of the Sun, Moon, and Planets is an important part of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, as it depicts what the church believes as their creation. The purpose of this painting was not only to tell a story, but to further illuminate the light in which we seek. This beautiful piece of history will forever tell a story of light.

Label Lies: Uncovered
Reading labels at the supermarket is becoming increasingly more difficult. With so many food brand varieties, how are we to know which one is best? Sucrose, glucose, maltose: isn’t it all the same? The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) requires that most prepared foods like, bread, cereal, canned and frozen foods, snacks, desserts, drinks, and like, are accompanied with a nutrition label detailing the ingredients. However, the FDA only requires the main ingredients to be listed on the labels. So, then, what is considered a main ingredient?
Many cases against large branch retailers have consisted of possible allergens that were not listed on the nutrition label. However, because there are no legal requirements to list all ingredients, no legal action can be taken.
All nutrition facts in the U.S. are based off a 2,000 calorie diet. This is the average amount the FDA believes is “healthy” for the average 150lb man to eat, with proper exercise and the use of nutritional supplements. Ingredients are listed in order from highest to lowest quantity, according to their weight. Again, Federal law only requires roughly the first twenty ingredients to be listed.
Recently, a health class at UCLA conducted a study on large supermarket chains. Students found that a new fad of dieting and exercise is taking over. The study completed using Trader Joe’s products found that the popular retailer has begun to ask distributors to remove certain ingredients from thier food labels. While strolling down a grocery aisle, a consumer might note that Trader Joe’s doesn’t usually sell ‘brand name labels’. In fact, 80% of Trader Joe’s products are the generic products the company has self produced. Because of this, it is much easier to change nutrition labels.
The average American consumer regularly purchases the same items when they go to the super market. However, even if the ‘Average Joe’ does read labels, will he actually know what is inside his food? Will anyone ever know what is inside of their food? The FDA recently released a food defect handbook including tainted products being sold everywhere across the nation. The handbook includes counts of peanut butter averaging 30 insect fragments per 100 grams. In canned tomato sauce, an average of 10 or more fly eggs were found per 100 grams. These defects have not been recalled yet because it has not reached the “standard for recalls”. Do you really want tainted food to continue to be sold?
A survey conducted at UC Irvine shows that 81% of consumers would still eat their favorite foods if they were informed that the food was tainted / contained animal feces. What has come of our society? Is our society really as ignorant as to ignore basic health warnings given?
What is and is not socially acceptable in our nation has been on debate for the past three decades. It is ridiculous that our society has sunken to the level so deep as to lie to consumers just to make a quick dollar. If people want change, then they need to make it. Consumers need to speak up for their rights! Food has been an increasing issue within the last decade. If change is to be made, these issues need to be taken up with a higher authority.
We need to start a food revolution! Our community already notices the bad decisions being made by the government. We have farmers markets, co ops and organic options available at the supermarket, but unless everyone is educated on this important problem, nothing is going to happen. Viva la Comida Revolutiondo!
