Today we went to the experimental aquarium at SIO UCSD. Julia showed us around and let us pet some of the creatures in the petting tank. The experimental aquarium houses many experiments of the students at UCSD. After, we went to the fish collection library. UCSD's fish collection houses 20% of all specimens of fish. All fish are put first into formaldehyde and then in a 50% Isopropyl alcohol solution. The UCSD fish library was huge and had countless jars of specimens. We had lunch later on at the La Jolla Tide pools. In the afternoon, we went to the Water and Wastewater Environmental Monitoring & Technical Services Division laboratory. The facility monitors the bacteria levels in the water, mainly the affects from the discharge of the sewage treatment facilities.
We also toured the toxicology lab of the facility. They take water samples and incubate the bacteria to then analyze and collect data. This data is released to the county.
