In this project, we closely followed the 2012 election. We documented the great race through photgraphy. Also, we held debates on the different propositions that were proposed this year and held a mock election. I would like to congratulate President Barack Obama on his re-electoin.
This project has really showed me how uninformed and ignorant most of our voters are. I can say that this is probably the most informed I will ever be on politics.
From our debates, I have become a better arguer, and now understand the importance of research and fact checking.
Abortion Pro Argument
In 1973, in the case of Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court recognized that a woman’s right to choose abortion is a “fundamental right.” Since then, over 59,290,477 helpless lives have been taken (according to the CDC in 2011). According to the Declaration of Independence, “All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Allowing abortion directly contradicts the Declaration of Independence. Amongst this, the fact that fetuses feel pain, hippocratic oath doctors take is contradicted, and abortion has proved to increase the risk of death amongst women are reasons why abortion should not be legal.
A common argument is that a fetus does not feel pain, when in fact, it does. By 20 weeks, a baby is quite developed. By 20 weeks, the unborn child has hair, fingernails, working vocal cords, sucks her thumb, and grasps with her hands and kicks. Also, Electrical brain wave patterns can be recorded at 43 days. This is usually ample evidence that “thinking” is taking place in the brain.
Common types of abortion include Partial-birth abortion, Saline abortion, and Dilation and Evacuation. Partial Abortion is when the unborn baby is delivered feet first, except for the head, which is punctured at the base of the skull with a sharp object. The brain is then suctioned out, killing the child. (This method was outlawed in the United States in 2007.) Saline abortion is when salt water is injected into the womb through the mother’s abdomen. The unborn baby swallows this fluid, is poisoned and dies in a process that sometimes takes 24 hours. The toxic saline solution causes severe burns over the unborn child’s entire body. The most common type of abortion, Dilation and Evacuation, is when Sharp-edged instruments are used to grasp, twist and tear the baby’s body into pieces, which are then removed from the womb.
Dilation and Evacuation abortion is most commonly used when an illegal “Back Alley” abortion is performed. When this procedure is undergone illegally, sometimes instruments being used are not properly sanitized, making the woman at higher risk of a complication, injury, or even death. Making abortion illegal has the ability to eliminate this issue.
Some others argue however, that an abortion is a medical procedure done by a trained professional. However, that directly contradicts the Hippocratic oath doctors take. One section of the original oath reads: "I will not give a woman a pessary [a device inserted into the vagina] to cause an abortion."
Doctors have also proven that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer and miscarriages for future pregnancies. 15% of 1st Trimester Miscarriages were attributed to a prior abortion (stated in the June 2003 Published in International Journal of Epidemiology). When an abortion is given incorrectly, it may lead to tearing in the uterus, and complications in the ovaries. "I regret it. I regret it so much." Cathy Wexler is now infertile because of the abortion she had when she was 19.
Although Cathy is infertile, other women, like Jill Mancer were less fortunate. Jill was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. In early pregnancy, levels of estrogen increase, leading to breast growth in preparation for a woman to milk her child. When the process is interrupted by abortion, immature cells are left in the woman's breasts, resulting in a greater potential risk of breast cancer.
As these many consequences can come from abortion, it is important that we are proactive in protecting our mothers. There are many alternatives to abortion, such as abstinence, contraceptives, and adoption. No life should be spared for the convenience of someone else’s.

Women have the right to decide what they want for themselves considering that a fetus is not a human being, fetuses are incapable of feeling pain when an abortion is performed. Also, by having access to legal, professionally-performed abortions, it reduces injury and death caused by unsafe illegal abortions.
Many would argue that a fetus is a human being but, personhood at conception is not a proven biological fact. An article in the Time Magazine reads, “"But isn't it human?" —as if we secretly think a fetus is really a creature from outer space. If you point out that a fetus consists of human tissue and DNA, anti-choicers triumphantly claim you just conceded it's a human being. Now, a flake of dandruff from my head is human, but it is not a human being, and in this sense, neither is a zygote.” After all, Fetuses are incapable of feeling pain when an abortion is performed according to Stuart W. G. Derbyshire, PhD.
"Not only has the biological development not yet occurred to support pain experience, but the environment after birth, so necessary to the development of pain experience, is also yet to occur." Some may argue that the electrical brain wave patterns can be recorded at 43 days. But according to PhD Derbyshire, these wave patterns are not nearly as developed as an adult human being.
The World Health Organization estimated in 2006 that "back-alley" abortions cause 68,000 maternal deaths each year in countries where abortion is not legal. There are about 1,800 licensed physicians who provide abortions in the United States. These doctors, not politicians, should have the authority to make medical decisions regarding abortion. Abortion is a medical procedure. Access to legal, professionally-performed abortions reduces injury and death caused by unsafe illegal abortions.
Making abortions legal will reduce the risk women have to undertake when choosing to get an abortion. Making abortions legal also the potential to provide more affordable resources to women across the country.
The History of Abortion
“The debate over whether or not abortion should be a legal option continues to divide Americans long after the US Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision on Roe v. Wade declared the procedure a "fundamental right” on Jan. 22, 1973.” (procon.org) Before 1973, abortion has been illegal in all states of America. This problem lead to many Back-Alley abortions.
Now, about 36 states have a consent law, which means a soon-to-be mother under the age of 18 has to have a parents consent before undergoing an abortion. The other 24 states have made it illegal to perform abortions. Many “pro-life” supporters of abortion only have the argument that, “abortion is against God’s will” and that, “an abortion is the murder of an innocent life”, when in fact a fetus is not a proven human being.
The Declaration of Independence states that "All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." By this statement, one could go one of two ways- That a woman has the Liberty to choose what she wants, or that a fetus is entitled to Life.
This has been a growing debate across the country that many politicians do not see as a “important” problem. However, 38% of (legal) abortions performed result in the deaths of mothers versus 49% of maternal death due to an (illegal) abortion.
